Plot introduction
年青爱国工程师廖锡能，如何热心地研究开阔中国铁路的工程。期间，由于世界不景气，以致锡能失业。面对生活的压迫，锡能唯有当苦力。其后，锡能因误会而顿成阶下囚，累得妻子在怀孕期间得不到照顾，就连母亲病逝，他都无法前往奔丧。然而，锡能最终亦克服了重重困难，将他理想中这条关乎中国国防和国计民生的铁路变成事实。
